How much can I expect to pay for a notarization?

Updated: Apr 17

A Michigan notary may charge $10.00 per notarization, plus a travel fee agreed upon prior to the notary traveling to the signer. There may also be a charge to provide a witness (usually $25 per witness) or courier fees. The notary is required to provide a detailed quote BEFORE the appointment takes place. Payment should only be provided at the time services are rendered, not in advance when booking your appointment. Beware any service which expects full payment up front, especially if they do not offer any refunds.

Per the Michigan Law on Notarial Acts act - Act 238 - 55.285, section 25.7 - "By law, the fee charged by a notary public for performing a notarial act shall not be more than $10.00 for any individual transaction or notarial act. A notary public shall either conspicuously display a sign or expressly advise an individual concerning the fee amount to be charged for a notarial act before the notary public performs the act. Before the notary public commences to travel in order to perform a notarial act, the notary public and client may agree concerning a separate travel fee to be charged by the notary public for traveling to perform the notarial act."
